Channel rules meeting

  • Date: March 10th, 2013
  • Location: #archlinux-women on freenode.net

There are no logs or minutes for this meeting because it quickly turned into a sprint. The text below is the result.

Draft channel rules

#archlinux-women is…

The IRC channel for the Arch Linux Women project. And our monthly meetings are held here.

A SAFE SPACE!

  • You should be CONSCIOUSLY aware of who you are and who others are so that no one gets hurt by words or actions from you, even if you did not mean it. Some words or actions are especially hurtful and dehumanizing. It can be hard to see them as such, so when others say to stop, please do so even if you disagree.
  • Asking for personal information or doing “a/s/l” is not acceptable.

For encouragement!

Not #archlinux-offtopic-lite! Anyone can join, but the channel is PRIMARILY FOR women and other systemically marginalized groups. This means men in particular must be conscious of what channel they're in. You're a guest - act like it!

Not a dating site! The channel is not for dating or picking up chicks. If you do this, you will be asked once to stop or take it to PM. If you do not stop, you will be banned.

Not the boy's locker room! what about the whole bro thing? and how to enforce / explain that?

Not 4chan! We believe in free speech too, but there are other corners of the internet where you can say whatever you want. Use them.

Not for offensive discussions! Every once in a while, a discussion may happen and someone watching it may find it inappropriate for the channel. If they say it's inappropriate, please stop. If you continue, you will be kicked, and if you do not stop after being kicked, you will be banned.

Not for discouragement! Please avoid…………

  • Telling people to read documentation without being sure that you understood each other. Or even worse, ONLY telling them to read documentation.
  • Telling people their ideas are not worth considering.
  • Barging in with an attitude of superiority.

describe how to respond if one accidentally (or not) causes a problem - apologize, back away, make amends, etc.

Slinging around the terms “Nazi”, “rape” and [can't remember] as if they had less value than pokemon medals.

Serious about it! Don't argue with the mods. We've kickbanned before and we can do it again.
